San Mateo County Is Offering Civics 101 ClassesHAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT LOCAL GOVERNMENT? WANT TO LEARN FROM DEPARTMENT HEADS AND OTHER COUNTY LEADERS? THEN CIVICS 101 IS FOR YOU!

The County of San Mateo is recruiting for their Annual Civics 101 Academy. In September, Civics 101 kicks off its free nine week series of courses centered around County Government and is currently recruiting for the 2018 session.

Civics 101 is a free, nine-week program that provides participants with an in-depth look at County programs, services and finances. Participants are exposed to the workings of County government, primarily via presentations by department heads. There are brief Q&As after each presentation.

The program is open to individuals 18 and older who live or work in San Mateo County. Classes will be held Wednesday Evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM between September 12 and November 14 in locations throughout San Mateo County. One Saturday morning session from 10:00 AM to noon will also be held.

Richmond District Autumn Moon Festival is on September 8

It's time for the 2nd Annual Autumn Moon Festival!  Autumn Moon Festival celebrations have been held throughout Asia for well over 1,000 years. This holiday is a time to reflect upon the bounty of the summer harvest, the fullness of the moon, and the myth of the immortal moon Goddess, Chang-O, who lives in the moon. The Moon Festival is often considered a “Chinese Thanksgiving” because of its celebration of gratitude and inclusion of abundant food – including the popular moon cake. The Autumn Moon Festival will be a fun, family-friendly event where attendees will have a taste of the cultural diversity of the Richmond District. Please join us!

Backpack Giveaways

Hard to believe it’s almost time for back-to-school. To make sure every kid is ready to start school, some districts and non-profits are giving away free backpacks filled with school supplies. Each location requires proof residency and/or ID.

  • San Francisco: August 7, 5 - 7 PM at Minnie & Lovie Ward Rec Center. In-person pre-registration suggested. Call 415-406-1370 to make an appointment to register. Open to residents of ZIP Codes 94112 or 94132.
  • South San Francisco: August 9, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at South San Francisco High School. Prior in-person pre-registration required at the YMCA. Details here.
  • Daly City/Broadmoor/Colma:
  • August 10: In-person enrollment runs through August 10 at the Daly City Community Service Center. Contact the Daly City Partnership at 650-301-3300. If you would like to donate, any Daly City or Colma Police or Fire station will accept school supplies and backpacks.
  • August 11: 9:00 a.m. - 12 Noon at the Bayshore Community Center; open to students of the Bayshore Elementary School District.
