Governor Signs SB 892 For Annual Proclamation of the Lunar New Year

I applaud Governor Brown for signing SB 892, which I co-authored. An annual proclamation of the Lunar New Year encourages schools to participate in the holiday’s traditions and discuss the accomplishments of API Californians across our state. It’s a great way to promote cultural understanding and inclusivity to our children.

Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor To Retire in December

Congratulations & thank you to Mac Taylor, who’s retiring after 40 years of service to the State of CA. Appointed in 2008, he was most recently the Legislative Analyst, the non-partisan fiscal advisor to the Legislature. He's only the fifth person to ever hold the job. It was my pleasure to honor him on the Assembly floor.

I’m honored to stand with Governor Brown, as he signed his last California budget as governor. This spending plan:

  • Combats homelessness
  • Invests in youth
  • Helps struggling Californians
  • Boosts reserves to historic levels

It makes the right investments & reflects California values. Watch remarks from me and Governor Brown here.

It’s my honor to name Iana Lim as my district’s Veteran of the Year. She served in the U.S. Navy from 2010-2014 as a Machinist Mate Third Class, servicing steam powered ships. She was sent all over the world for the global war on terrorism, including Haiti, Guantanamo Bay, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the Mediterranean, among other locations. Iana was awarded several medals during her service. She just graduated from San Francisco State with a degree in International Business. While a student, she supported hundreds of student veterans with her advocacy work, seminars & outreach. Congratulations Iana & thank you for serving our country!

In addition, we honored former Asian Law Caucus Executive Director and my former Board Chair at Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Law Caucus, Peggy Saika, who has been a big influence in my career. I'm proud to honor Bijan Sartipi, who recently retired from CalTrans after more than three decades at the agency. Since 2002, he had been Director of District 4, overseeing many of the Bay Area's biggest transportation projects. In San Francisco, that included the $1.1B Presidio Project which opened in July 2015, replacing Doyle Drive. With his parents present, Bijan (far right) accepted the Assembly resolution thanking him for his leadership and service. We wish him all the best in retirement.

Assemblymember Phil Ting and Rabbi Carla Fenves During the Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony

Assemblymember Phil Ting honored Rabbi Carla Fenves during the California State Assembly’s annual recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Week. She is the granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors, Ervin and Vera Fenves of Hungary. During World War II, Vera survived by hiding in the kitchen of a righteous gentile family’s restaurant. Ervin escaped a Nazi labor camp and joined the resistance using his artistic talents to forge documents. After first meeting as children, Ervin and Vera reconnected after the war, married, and had two children.
