Public Education in a Pandemic

As a parent of kids in local public schools, I share concerns many of you feel about the future of the educational landscape for our children, educators, administrators and staff:

  • Are our kids learning what they will need to continue their education next year and beyond?
  • How do we ensure equal education for all students regardless of family circumstance, income or special needs?
  • Do educators have the resources and training they need to meet learning objectives?
  • Who's providing children the social and mental health services they often receive at school?
  • Is adequate food available for our most vulnerable youth?
  • How will we plan for future learning if personal distancing and stay-at-home public health orders continue into the Fall or beyond?

On Thursday, April 23rd at 2:00 pm, we'll be holding a Virtual Town Hall to discuss these and other questions. You may submit questions through my website here, then join the live conversation on my Facebook page.

My guests will be SFUSD Commissioners Jenny Lam, Alison Collins, and Lowell High School science teacher Katherine Melvin. They will be on hand to answer questions about the work our educators and district have been doing on behalf of our students, as well as provide some insights. Additionally, they can speak to the status of educational programming, efforts to bridge gaps in technology, and other issues as distance learning becomes a new reality.

I hope you can tune in.

Sincerely,
