More Californians Qualify for the
Earned Income Tax Credit
The tax season is underway, and I want to make sure you know about an effective tool that can help lift millions of individuals and families out of poverty. It's called the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), and as Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, I've championed the tax refund program's expansion because it puts money back into the pockets of people who need it the most.
For the 2018 tax year, we've added young adults and seniors without dependents to the list of low-income workers eligible for the CalEITC. We also increased the income limits again. If you earned less than $24,950 last year, whether through self-employment or a paycheck, you may qualify for a refund of up to $2,879, depending on household size. Please watch this video for more information.
When combined with the federal earned income tax credit, the CalEITC can be life-changing, enabling families to pay bills or save extra money for an emergency. I encourage all workers to file a tax return, especially low-wage workers who generally don't owe taxes, as a return must be filed to get your money back. Don't miss out on your refund!
Additional resources, including help finding free tax assistance to claim the credit, are available at www.CalEITC4me.org. Taxes are due April 15th.
