I nearly fell for it. I recently received a text, saying I had an outstanding FasTrak balance. It was a real possibility since I commute back and forth from San Francisco to Sacramento. I was about to pay the bill when I realized the website address seemed off. Well, my instincts were right. Those charges were fake.

I came to find out California is currently facing a wave of toll charge scams. With many bridges and express lanes going cash-free since the pandemic, electronic toll collection through FasTrak is now routine, opening the door to a new form of fraud. Don't fall for it.

Scammers posing as toll collectors claim you have an unpaid toll, urging prompt payment to avoid late fees. Like my text, these fraudulent messages often include a link to a bogus website, allowing these imposters to steal your money, credit card details, and other personal information once you enter them.

It's important to slow down before acting. Scammers want you to react quickly when they send you an unexpected text message, so don't rush to respond or click on links. Note that FasTrak, DOES NOT request payment by text. So, it's best to not respond or click on links. Instead, delete and report suspicious texts without engaging. If you have clicked on any links or provided your information, secure your personal information and financial accounts. Check your bank accounts for any suspicious activity and dispute any unfamiliar charges.
