Remembering a Year Ago

This week marks the Sixth Annual National Gun Violence Survivors Week - a time when we come together to share and amplify the voices of gun violence survivors.

I attended the Half Moon Bay ceremony a few days ago to remember the seven farm workers killed at their workplace a year ago. I also met the survivors of that mass shooting that was close to home.

This is also the one-year anniversary of the Monterey Park tragedy, in which eleven people were killed. We can honor all of them by continuing our work to end gun violence and aim for a future where we are all safe. We must do better for California.

Gun safety has been one of my priorities as your legislator. I've successfully championed numerous state bills, including the expansion of California's red flag law where law enforcement, close family, school administrators and employers can file a Gun Violence Restraining Order. If approved by a judge, the named individual's weapon(s) can be temporarily taken away, if they pose a danger to themselves or others.

More recently, I was able to pass legislation that allows Californians, including survivors of gun violence, to sue the gun industry for the harm they cause; another assigns merchant codes to firearms and ammunition - like most products have - to make it easier to track large and/or unusual purchases.

Let's work together to do more to end gun violence and give communities the resources they need to heal.
