New Year, New Laws
Happy Holidays! I hope you get to spend some time with family and friends.
It's hard to believe that 2022 is almost over. As we get ready to start a new year, I wanted to let you know about a few state laws that I championed taking effect on January 1.
-
Fairness & Equity
Pedestrians and drivers will see some changes to the way some violations are handled.
- AB 2147: Legalizes safe crossings when the roadways are clear of moving vehicles. Jaywalking enforcement has disproportionately impacted people of color. Not only can the police encounters turn deadly, the citations cost hundreds of dollars.
- AB 2594: Creates opportunities for drivers to pay their unpaid road and bridge toll invoices before late fees/penalties are assessed. Unbanked individuals have been seeing their balances balloon to thousands of dollars simply because cash options have been eliminated.
-
Environment/Health
AB 1200 bans the use of PFAS chemicals in fast food packaging. These harmful chemicals are used to prevent grease and other liquids from leaking through, but they get into our soil and groundwater. In addition, we must begin protecting ourselves from PFAS because studies have linked these chemicals to cancer, hormone disruption, thyroid disease and vaccine interference.
-
Unclaimed Property
AB 1208 makes it easier for you to access your unclaimed property. The California Secretary of State is currently holding $12 billion in assets from forgotten bank, stock or bond accounts; insurance claims; wages owed; or safety deposit box contents waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners. Some of the process has been streamlined.
As I put together my 2023 priorities, please attend my Community Coffee on January 7 to provide input or feedback. You can RSVP here.
Here's to a great 2023,
