This is one is for the books! As the first state in the country to implement its own Universal Meals program at all public schools this past school year, California nourished millions of students and supported their academic success.
As Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, I'm proud of the $1.2 billion investment we made to offer free breakfast and lunch to any child attending transitional kindergarten through high school, regardless of income.
The good news is the program is continuing this summer with some schools starting meal services as soon as this week. In our district:
- San Francisco Unified parents can find information and locations here.
- Northern San Mateo County parents can visit this site.
Studies show children are able to learn better and focus more when they aren't distracted by hunger. Another advantage of making meals available at no charge is it removes the stigma generally associated with income-based programs. Access to food ensures all of our kids are ready to learn, laying the foundation to do well in school.
Enjoy your summer,
