Deadline to Change Grades Received During COVID to "Pass/No Pass" Extended to October 1

Dear Parents,

So many students have faced setbacks during the pandemic; but struggling in high school during this difficult time shouldn't negatively impact your child's GPA, or jeopardize their chances to be admitted to college and qualify for financial aid.

Assembly Bills 104 and 167 ensure students aren't penalized for falling behind during the last school year by allowing students to change grades received during the 2020-21 school year to "Pass or No Pass." Unlike letter grades, "Pass" grades do not affect a student's GPA and ensure the coursework still counts towards a student's graduation requirements.

High school students must act quickly! Although school districts may extend the deadline longer, this legislation mandates public school districts must accept the changes for applications made by October 1, 2021. Families should contact their high school directly if they have difficulty locating the grade change request form.

San Francisco Unified, South San Francisco Unified and Jefferson Union High School District all have their own forms. San Francisco has extended the deadline to October 22, 2021. The deadlines for South San Francisco and Jefferson Union High School Districts currently are October 1, 2021.

California State University (CSU) system and University of California (UC) will accept transcripts with "Pass/No Pass" grades to determine admission for any students enrolled in high school during the 2020-21 school year. A list of private universities that have agreed to accept transcripts with Pass/No Pass grades for admissions is also available on the California Department of Education's website. NOTE: Grade changes to Pass/No Pass grades cannot result in a student losing eligibility for California State Student Financial Aid.

Families should contact their school for more information on how "Pass/No Pass" grades can benefit your child.
