Support Education Funding Reform
For the first time in five years, California’s schools are finally on track to receive a badly-needed increase in funding, thanks to an improving economy and the voters’ passage of Proposition 30 that has infused our education system with new revenue. And, equally important, the legislature is finalizing the details of a historic reform of the school funding system that will provide vitally needed, additional funding to school districts serving students facing great challenges.
As a member of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, I am leading the fight to enact this transformative new policy, modeled after one proposed by Governor Jerry Brown earlier this year, that will guarantee our schools have the funding to ensure the success of all students. The concept is very simple – school districts, such as San Francisco Unified, that serve many students who are low-income or learning English will get crucial extra funding they need to help these students have a shot at living the California dream.
Ask any CEO of a successful business what they believe is the most important thing government can do for them. Their answer is to make sure we have a highly-educated, technologically proficient workforce so that their company, and our country, can compete in the global economy. No challenge we face is more vital to our future, and I am proud to be at the forefront of this reform that will set us on a path to achieve this goal.
The deadline to enact a state budget for the upcoming year is June 15, and we are poised to have a balanced budget in place with a sensible reserve for uncertainties, and that will establish a long-overdue priority on excellence in education for the next generation of Californians.
